PERSIAN GULF WAR

The Persian Gulf War (January - February 1991), also called Desert Storm, was a military struggle fought principally in Kuwait and Iraq. The crisis began in August of 1990, when Iraq, led by Saddam Hussein, invaded Kuwait. Between August and November of 1990 the United Nations passed a series of resolutions that demanded that Iraq withdraw unconditionally from Kuwait by January 15, 1991. By that time, approximately 500,000 allied ground, air, and naval forces (primarily from the United States, Saudi Arabia, Great Britain, Egypt, Syria, and France) were deployed and assembled against an Iraqi army estimated at that time to be about 540,000 strong.
