Mary Gove - Foster Daughter of Ralph and Alice Mousall

November 2, 1997 - Received information from Madeline Dodd regarding the daughter of Ralph and Alice Mousall.

"You have the 2nd Wife of Thomas (2) Goble as Mary Mousall. This is not true. This is a misunderstanding arising from the fact that Ralph Mousall's will names his "daughter Mary Gove" and that has been misinterpreted as Mary Goble. In actual fact, he had a foster daughter named Mary Gove...who is the person named in the will and there is no connection to the Goble family."

Mrs. Dodd has provided the following references: clarification appeared in NEHGS "Register", v. 99, January 1945, p. 77....(and based on NEHGR No. 7, p. 170) in will of John Gove of Charlestown, dated 22 (11) 1647/8, which says "I do give & bequeath with my wifes full consent, my daughter Mary GOVE to Ralph Mousall & his wife , as their own child, forever", and he included a silver porringer and 5 pounds to pay her way

The probable explanation (according to the article) is that the mother had periodic attacks of mental illness (as did her son Edward Gove) and that twin children of her second marriage to John Mansfield were also "put out". The major thrust of the article was actually to explain the "daughter" Ruth Wood, who turned out to be a granddaughter.

John Gove was a resident of Concord during the same period of time as was Thomas (1) Goble and Ralph Mousall. This discovery means there is no "blood" connection between the Goble and Mousall families! Thank you Madeline!
